Gateway to Wild Blueberry Lands:
Sharing knowledge and promoting prosperity of individuals,
businesses, and the ecosystem of Maine’s wild blueberry lands
Our museum and it's retail store welcomes over 18,000 visitors from 50 states and 30 countries, and hosts numerous educational events for local schools and community groups. By improving and expanding exhibits, and developing new programs, we aim to maximize the opportunities to support local residents and educate the broader public about the value and importance of Maine's wild blueberry economy, and the role of the local growers: the science of blueberries including their health benefits, the unique ecosystem for the barrens, the potential impacts of climate change, and the culture and history of blueberry growing communities.
The blueberry dome can play an important role in encouraging tourism in the Downeast region which supports local businesses, including restaurants, hotels and shops.
Through strengthening our programs and marketing as well as making physical improvements to the Center, its attractions and community resources, we can provide maps, brochures, tours, and advice. We plan to make the dome a gathering place for the local community and to introduce visitors to the wild blueberry lands and the local culture.
The Wild Blueberry Commons is a community-centered program that collects and presents stories born from the barrens and honors community members who have contributed to the wild blueberry industry in Maine. Stories of Wild Blueberry Lands develops an awareness and understanding of rural communities of Downeast Maine and what it means to be connected to the land we come from. These stories are featured online, on social media, and as an exhibit in our museum.
WBHC has forged over two dozen partnerships with local schools, community groups and farms, providing a valuable avenue for amplifying our message and programs while promoting agritourism, education and commerce. Over the next two years, we aim to improve and expand our online resources from gateway to community/school outreach, to museum exhibits and stories that can reach an even broader audience within and outside of Maine.
