SUMMARY:Shining A Light
DESCRIPTION:An Indigenous Perspective of the Wild Blueberry Culture\, History and Art.\nJoin us for an enriching and thought-provoking event that brings together Indigenous cultural preservation and environmental artistry. Featured speakers include **Dwayne Tomah**\, a fluent speaker and teacher of the Passamaquoddy language\, and **Jordan Ramos**\, a multidisciplinary artist and environmental advocate. \nDwayne Tomah is a respected cultural leader and language keeper from the Passamaquoddy Nation. Deeply committed to the revitalization and preservation of his people’s language\, Tomah uses innovative tools such as mobile apps and music to make the Passamaquoddy language more accessible to younger generations. He has curated Indigenous collections in museums and is currently collaborating with the Library of Congress to translate and interpret rare historic recordings of Passamaquoddy elders\, ensuring that traditional knowledge and stories are not lost to time. An outspoken advocate for Indigenous rights and historical truth\, Tomah brings a powerful voice to the conversation about cultural resilience and reconciliation. \nJordan Ramos is a University of Maine student double-majoring in Environmental Science and Studio Art. Her artistic practice explores the interdependence between humans and the natural world\, with a strong focus on sustainability and place-based heritage. Ramos is the recipient of the prestigious McGillicuddy Humanities Fellowship\, which supports her ongoing research and creative work on Maine’s wild blueberry harvest—an industry deeply tied to local ecology\, labor history\, and climate change. Her project will culminate in a public exhibition at the Wild Blueberry Heritage Museum in 2025\, showcasing artwork that blends environmental science with visual storytelling. \nThis event offers a unique opportunity to hear from two individuals whose work bridges tradition and innovation\, language and art\, science and community. Audience members will have the chance to engage directly with the speakers during a Q&A and participate in discussions on how cultural and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand. \nFor more information\, contact Holly Parker at h.parker@bowdoin.edu \nFollow Jordan Ramos on Instagram: @jordanramos.art \nMilbridge Theatre \n26 Main St Milbridge\, ME 04658\nMilbridge\, MAINE 04658\nUnited States\n(207) 546-8029\nMap
